What we’ve done so far:

• As of June 2023, we’ve installed 560 air source heat pumps across our trade counters and contact centre so far. Air source heat pumps replace the need for fossil fuel gas or oil heating with heating powered by 95% renewable electricity. 9 Screwfix stores, our Head Office, Business Centre, and most of our Distribution Centres also have solar panels installed.

• In 2022, we started using HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) fuel in our logistics fleet. HVO is a renewable replacement for diesel, and our HVO is from certified re-used sources. This can reduce a journey’s carbon emissions by up to 90%.

• Working with our suppliers and other stakeholders to reduce our scope 3 emissions (indirect emissions from product manufacturing and product use).

What we’re still working on:

• We will continue to install air source heat pumps at every new store we open, as well as retrofitting as many existing stores with air source heat pumps as we can.

• We aim to continue to increase the proportion of our delivery fleet powered by lower carbon fuels like HVO over the coming years and trialling new low carbon technologies when they become available.

• We’re measuring our scope 3 emissions (indirect emissions from product manufacturing and product use) to identify hotspots and we’ll be working hard to reduce them.

What we’ve done so far:

• Over 99.9% of Screwfix’s waste has been diverted from landfill every year since 2018, with the remaining waste either being recycled by material, or incinerated if recycling is not possible.

• In 2022-23, 81% of our waste was recycled into new materials, the remaining 19% was incinerated. When waste is incinerated, heat generated is captured and used to create electricity.

What we’re still working on:

• We know we use too much paper as a business and are working to reduce our reliance on printing. So far, we have eliminated millions of sheets of printing by turning off duplicated receipts in stores, removing A4 receipts from home deliveries and making till receipts optional. We are working towards a paper-free operation.

• We’re partnering with suppliers to deliver products in reusable packaging, saving wasted transit packaging like cardboard boxes, pallets and plastic pallets wrap.

What we’ve done so far:

• In 2022-23, 94% of our products containing wood or paper were made from recycled or sustainably managed timber with ‘full chain of custody’ FSC or PEFC certification. Full chain of custody means the certified timber is tracked all the way from forest to market.

• In 2022 we stopped selling any products containing wood or paper that did not have ‘full chain of custody’ FSC or PEFC certification.

• At Screwfix we are committed to respecting and upholding human rights. We partner with Sedex, a collaborative platform for sharing ethical supply chain data to review our products’ manufacturing sites and ensure they are meeting our ethical standards. We require our suppliers to register their manufacturing sites on the platform so that we can review the results of audits and questionnaires on labour standards, health & safety, the environment, and business ethics.

What we’re still working on:

• Every year we check and review our wood and paper products’ FSC and PEFC certifications and we aim to achieve as close to 100% products certified with ‘full chain of custody’ as possible every year.

• Kingfisher has an ambition to be Forest Positive by 2025, so Screwfix is partnering with the Woodland Trust this year on a major project in the Yorkshire Dales to support reforestation and biodiversity.

What we’ve done so far:

• We audit our suppliers and check products to guarantee the highest levels of quality, safety and durability, offering at least a one-year guarantee across our full range.

•We offer a free collect and repair service for all major branded power tools and many of our own power tools. Within a few days, any faulty power tools are repaired and returned ready to use. Since 2018, over 100,000 products have been repaired.

• We’ve been partnering with iForce for several years to reduce waste from returned electrical products. Returns are tested, cleaned, and refurbished for resale at a discounted rate. Over 1000 refurbished product lines have been set-up for sale on the Screwfix.com website. Last year 100,000 products were refurbished and resold in total, and we have exciting plans to increase this further.

What we’re still working on:

• We’re expanding our testing and refurbishment operation with our returns partner to increase our sales of second-life products.

• We’ll be extending our range of spare parts to help customers prolong product life wherever possible.

• We are growing our Own Brand Collect & Repair proposition, with fast, free repairs now available on more Erbauer Power Tools and Titan Garden Power products.

What we’ve done so far:

• All plastic in our delivery packaging has been removed except some tape, but we’re working on a solution for this.

• The majority of our LAP range’s packaging has been redesigned to eliminate plastic and the packaging has been replaced by sustainably sourced and recycled cardboard. Site, Swirl and Turbo ranges are also transitioning rapidly to packaging with reduced plastic, made from recycled materials and easily recyclable for customers.

What we’re still working on:

• More new products are coming to shelves from Swirl, Turbo and Site in packaging with reduced plastic, made from recycled materials and easily recyclable for customers.

• We are supporting and encouraging our suppliers to make the transition to sustainably sourced and easily recyclable packaging with minimal plastic, we know there is still a long way to go on the sustainable packaging journey.

What we’ve done so far:

• We have increased the number of products we sell with more sustainable features, from workwear made from recycled polyester, to a great range of Smart thermostats in plumbing, to taps that use less water. 

• Our customers have told us they want to hear more about sustainable features and benefits of products when making buying decisions, so we have launched the first products labelled with the green star. What we’re still working on:

• We will keep communicating the sustainable features and benefits of our products, helping customers to make an informed choice using the Green Star icon.

• We will increase our range of products that are made sustainably or made to support sustainable living.

What you wear matters. We are working with GRS (Global Recycled Standard) to ensure that our workwear, and other types of PPE, are made from recycled polyester – without compromising on safety and comfort.
